What this guide covers: How to pressure wash driveways made from block paving, tarmac, concrete and resin-bound surfaces — including which attachments to use, how to apply detergent correctly, and what to do after washing to keep the surface in good condition.
A driveway that's been left through autumn and winter picks up more than just dirt. Moss settles into the joints of block paving. Algae spreads across tarmac and concrete in the damp. Tyre marks and oil drips build up near where cars park regularly. By the time spring arrives, a basic rinse isn't going to touch it — and the wrong pressure washer technique can make some surface types worse rather than better.
The good news is that most driveways clean up well with the right approach. The key is matching the method to the surface — and understanding what your pressure washer is actually doing to the material underneath.
What type of driveway do you have?
Block paving — use a surface cleaner attachment rather than a lance. Work in overlapping passes. Re-sand joints with kiln-dried sand after washing. Tarmac — use a surface cleaner or keep the lance nozzle moving; pre-treat with driveway cleaner for algae and moss. Concrete and resin-bound — more tolerant of pressure; resin-bound surfaces should be cleaned gently as aggressive pressure can loosen aggregate from older installations. Imprinted concrete — lower pressure to preserve the sealant coat; water should bead on the surface rather than soaking in after washing.
What you need
- Pressure washer — V-TUF V3 (150 bar) for most driveways, V-TUF V5 (165 bar) for larger areas or heavier soiling
- Surface cleaner attachment — essential for block paving and large flat areas
- Patio or driveway cleaner with biocidal action
- Kiln-dried jointing sand — for re-sanding block paving joints after washing
How to clean your driveway
Apply driveway cleaner first and allow 10–15 minutes dwell time before washing. Use the V3 or V5 with the surface cleaner attachment on block paving and flat concrete. Switch to the lance with a fan nozzle for edges, steps and tighter areas. After washing block paving, brush kiln-dried jointing sand into the joints once fully dry. Don't wash toward the road — contaminated run-off entering a street drain is a pollution issue. Don't wash in freezing conditions.
