The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) announced that inspectors will be visiting woodworking businesses across Great Britain in April as part of a targeted inspection initiative. The focus of these visits is to check that businesses are adequately controlling the risk of exposure to wood dust — a substance known to cause occupational lung disease, asthma, and in some cases, nasal cancer.
Why Woodworking Businesses Are Being Targeted
Wood dust is classified as a hazardous substance under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002. Hardwood dust in particular is classified as a Group 1 human carcinogen. Despite clear legal obligations, many woodworking businesses still fail to adequately control dust levels, putting workers at risk of serious, life-limiting illness.
HSE inspectors will be checking that businesses have:
- Adequate dust extraction systems in place at the point of generation
- Systems that are regularly maintained and tested
- Local exhaust ventilation (LEV) systems examined by a competent person at least every 14 months
- Workers trained in safe working practices and the use of dust controls
- Suitable respiratory protective equipment (RPE) provided and used correctly
- Health surveillance in place for workers regularly exposed to wood dust
What Does This Mean for Your Business?
If your woodworking business is found to be inadequately controlling wood dust exposure, you could face improvement notices, prohibition notices, prosecution, and significant fines. More importantly, your workers could face serious, irreversible health consequences.
