Suction Has Dropped

Your V-TUF Mammoth isn't pulling like it used to. This is one of the most common Mammoth issues — and almost always a simple fix. Work through the checks below in order; you'll usually find the cause in the first two or three steps.

What's Happening

Suction loss on a Mammoth normally means airflow is being restricted somewhere between the floor tool and the motors. It's almost never the motors themselves — they're well-built and last for years. The usual culprits are filter, hose, tank, or seal issues.

Most likely cause A blocked or saturated filter. If you've been picking up fine dust without the nylon outer filter fitted, the basket filter clogs fast. On wet pickup, a saturated sponge filter chokes airflow within minutes.

How To Fix It

Suggested order to check

Filter → tank/float → hose → head seal → drain plug → motor. Most cases are solved by the first or second check.

  1. Switch off and unplug the machine before opening it. Always.
  2. Check the tank. Is it full or partly full? On wet pickup the float valve cuts airflow at capacity — feels like total suction loss. Drain it and test again.
  3. Open the head and inspect the basket filter. Look for caked dust, saturation, tears, or a damaged sealing ring. Tap out dust; rinse and dry if wet. If damaged, replace it — see parts below.
  4. Check the outer filter (if fitted). The nylon high-efficiency filter sits over the basket filter. If it's caked solid with fine dust, that's your problem. Rinse and dry, or replace.
  5. Inspect the hose. Disconnect at both ends. Look through it. Debris from wet pickup — cement slurry, plaster, food waste — can lodge in the bends. Flush with water if needed. Check for splits letting air in.
  6. Check the head seal. Are both tank clips fully engaged? Listen for a faint whistle when running — that's air bypassing the gasket. Worn clips can be replaced.
  7. Check the drain plug (Stainless / STXAUTO). Loose plug or perished seal = constant air leak. Tighten firmly. Replace the drain hose kit if the seal is gone.
  8. If everything above checks out and suction is still poor, contact our service team. Motor brushes can wear after heavy use, but it's the last thing to suspect, not the first.
Safety note Never run the vacuum without a filter, even briefly. The filter protects the motors and the air you're breathing. If you smell burning during testing, stop immediately and contact V-TUF service — that's a motor issue, not airflow.
