Dust Blowing Out The Back

Your V-TUF Mammoth XLR is releasing dust through the exhaust. This guide shows you what's gone wrong, how to fix it, and the exact parts you'll need — in stock and ready to ship from our Lincoln warehouse.

What's Happening

When dust escapes through the exhaust on the back of the machine, it means dust is bypassing the basket filter and being pushed straight through the motors. This is a problem because:

  • Health risk — the dust you're trying to collect is being released back into the air.
  • Motor damage — fine particles inside the motors will wear out the brushes and bearings. Left running, the motors will fail. On a 240V XLR that's three motors at £73.28 each.
Most likely cause The basket filter (VTVS021XLR) has either torn, isn't seated properly, or has been removed. Less commonly, the sealing ring at the top of the filter is damaged so dust slips around the rim rather than being caught.

How To Fix It

  1. Switch the machine OFF and unplug it from the wall before doing anything else.
  2. Release the two tank clips on the head and lift the head off the tank.
  3. Remove the basket filter and inspect it carefully — look for tears in the fabric, holes worn through, and damage to the rubber sealing ring at the top.
  4. Check the filter is the right way up and seated properly with no gaps around the rim where dust could escape.
  5. If the filter is damaged at all, replace it with a new Aqua-Dry basket filter (VTVS021XLR) — see below.
  6. If dust has already been going through the motors for a while, undo the 5 screws on top of the head, lift the cover, and blow the motor area and motor cooling fans clean with compressed air.
  7. Reassemble, fit the new filter, clip the head down firmly, and test on a small area before resuming work.
Safety note Never run the vacuum without a filter, even briefly. The filter is the only thing protecting the motors and the air you're breathing. If the motors smell burnt during testing, stop using the machine and contact our service team.
