Passenger Vessel & Riverboat Operations — Cleaning Equipment

V-TUF supplies pressure washers and industrial vacuums to passenger vessel operators, riverboat fleets, Thames river services and inland waterway passenger operators. Passenger vessel cleaning requires equipment that maintains presentation standards for a public-facing operation while meeting the specific compliance requirements of commercial passenger vessels — MAIB, MCA, Port of London Authority and Environment Agency discharge requirements on tidal and inland waterways.

Passenger vessel cleaning applications

Deck and exterior cleaning

Passenger vessel decks accumulate grime, biological growth, salt residue and general soiling through continuous daily operation. Typical operations include daily deck wash-down between services, periodic deep cleaning of hull sides and superstructure, gangway and boarding ramp cleaning, and canopy and windscreen maintenance. Pressure washing on passenger vessels requires controlled pressure to avoid surface damage to non-slip coatings and deck fittings. Surface cleaner attachments provide even coverage without the risk of stripe marks from a lance on flat deck surfaces.

Boarding area and pier cleaning

Boarding piers, gangways and embarkation areas on Thames and inland waterway services are public-facing and high-footfall — maintenance standards directly affect passenger safety and operator reputation. Non-slip surfaces require specific cleaning approaches — controlled pressure and appropriate cleaning products that clean effectively without removing the non-slip texture. COSHH assessment required for all cleaning chemicals used in passenger boarding areas.

Passenger saloon and interior cleaning

Passenger saloon areas, toilets, galley facilities and interior surfaces require industrial vacuum cleaning between services and periodic deep cleaning. Industrial wet and dry vacuums with appropriate filtration provide the capacity and suction required for passenger vessel interior cleaning on a tight turnaround schedule. Where pest control treatment has taken place in passenger areas, H-Class extraction may be required for cleanup of treated areas.

Engine room and engineering spaces

Passenger vessel engine rooms accumulate diesel, oil and bilge contamination. Hot water pressure washing at 70–90°C provides more effective degreasing of engine room surfaces than cold water. Industrial vacuums for dry debris and bilge area cleanup. All engine room wash-down water is bilge water and must be managed under MARPOL regulations — not discharged to the waterway.

Passenger vessel compliance topics

  • MARPOL — vessel discharge to waterway — wash-down water from vessel cleaning, particularly engine room and bilge cleaning, must not be discharged to the waterway. MARPOL Annex I prohibits oil and oily water discharge. Bilge water must be retained and disposed of through licensed facilities. Further reading: Environmental Permitting
  • Port of London Authority — Thames operations — vessels operating on the Thames are subject to PLA requirements. Wash-down water discharge directly to the Thames is not permitted. PLA environmental guidelines govern cleaning operations for Thames passenger vessel operators.
  • MCA — Maritime and Coastguard Agency — commercial passenger vessels operating in UK waters are subject to MCA certification and inspection. Cleaning and hygiene standards form part of MCA compliance for passenger-carrying vessels.
  • COSHH — cleaning chemicals in passenger areas — all cleaning chemicals used on passenger vessels are substances hazardous to health under COSHH 2002. Products used in passenger-accessible areas must be safe for use in enclosed spaces with limited ventilation. GB CLP chemical reclassification August 2026 affects all vessel cleaning chemicals. • Working at Height — vessel cleaning — cleaning of upper deck structures, masts, canopies and hull sides at pier may involve working at height. Further reading: Working at Height Regulations 2005

Equipment specification for passenger vessels

  • Cold water pressure washers — 240V — for deck and exterior cleaning from vessel shore power or pier supply. Compact, portable specification for vessel cleaning between services.
  • Hot water pressure washers — for engine room degreasing, galley cleaning and biological contamination on hull and deck surfaces. 70–90°C provides more effective results on organic soiling and grease than cold water.
  • Industrial wet and dry vacuums — for passenger saloon cleaning, bilge area dry debris and general vessel interior maintenance. V-TUF XR range provides the capacity for high-throughput passenger vessel turnaround cleaning.
  • Surface cleaner attachments — for flat deck and pier surface cleaning. Even pressure distribution across the deck without stripe marks from a lance. Essential for non-slip deck surface maintenance.
  • Foam lance system — for pre-soak application on heavily soiled exterior surfaces. Reduces water consumption and cleaning time on vessel exterior wash-down.
