Cleaning applications in vehicle workshops
Component and parts degreasing
Engine components, gearbox casings, brake calipers, suspension assemblies and sumps arrive coated in baked-on oil, grease and road film. Cold water alone will not shift it. Hot water pressure washing at 60–80°C breaks down the grease bond mechanically, which sharply reduces the volume of chemical degreaser required — and every litre of solvent you do not use is one less COSHH assessment, one less ventilation question and one less item of hazardous waste to dispose of. Where chemical degreasers remain necessary, they must be assessed under COSHH and operators given suitable PPE.
Workshop floor cleaning and oil contamination
Workshop floors accumulate oil, coolant, brake fluid, tyre rubber and general grime. Beyond the slip risk, contaminated floors track oil into reception areas and customer vehicles. Hot water pressure washing lifts embedded oil from concrete far more effectively than cold; a wet-and-dry industrial vacuum recovers the contaminated water so it can be routed to an interceptor rather than left to run to a surface drain.
Brake and clutch dust — the asbestos question
Brake and clutch assemblies on vehicles manufactured before 2000 may contain asbestos-based friction material. Compressed air blow-guns — still common in workshops — are the worst possible method, dispersing respirable fibres directly into the operator's breathing zone. Where asbestos-containing friction material is suspected, work falls under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and requires H-Class filtration, not a standard workshop vacuum. For modern non-asbestos pads, the dust is still a respirable nuisance controlled under COSHH and EH40 workplace exposure limits, and M-Class extraction is the appropriate minimum.
Underbody, chassis and commercial vehicle wash-down
Winter road salt, mud and agricultural contamination on chassis and underbody require sustained pressure and flow. Salt is corrosive and accelerates chassis failure, so removal is a maintenance function as much as a cleaning one. Hot water significantly improves salt and grease removal on underbody work.
Bodyshop preparation and sanding dust
Filler sanding, paint flatting and panel preparation generate fine respirable dust. On-tool extraction with an M-Class dust extractor captures it at source rather than letting it settle across the workshop and contaminate subsequent paint finishes — a quality benefit as well as a health one.
Compliance requirements for vehicle workshops
- COSHH 2002 — degreasers, solvents, brake cleaners and workshop chemicals require assessment, control measures and operator training.
- HSE EH40 — workplace exposure limits apply to brake dust, sanding dust and solvent vapour.
- Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 — friction material on pre-2000 vehicles; H-Class extraction and controlled methods required where asbestos is suspected.
- PUWER 1998 — pressure washers and workshop equipment must be suitable, maintained and inspected, with trained operators.
- Environmental Permitting — oily wash-down water must not enter surface water drains; interceptors or containment are required.
- DSEAR 2002 & ATEX — relevant where fuel vapour, solvent vapour or LPG conversion work is present.
- Chemical hazard reclassification, August 2026 — reclassification affects a number of cleaning and degreasing chemicals; review your COSHH file before the deadline.
