Waste Management, MRF and Recycling Facility Cleaning Equipment
Waste management, recycling and MRF cleaning equipment
Materials Recycling Facilities (MRFs), skip yards, transfer stations, waste treatment plants and recycling centres generate specific cleaning requirements — high-volume wash-down of sorting equipment, vehicle cleaning, yard maintenance, dust suppression and environmental permitting compliance for wash-down water discharge.
The Simpler Recycling regulations (in force for businesses from March 2025 and households from 2026) and mandatory plastic film collection requirements from March 2027 are driving significant capital investment in UK MRF infrastructure. New and upgraded sorting facilities require commercial-grade wash-down equipment capable of handling the volumes and contamination types generated in materials processing environments.
Equipment requirements by application
Sorting equipment and conveyor wash-down
MRF sorting lines, conveyor belts, optical sorters and baling equipment accumulate organic residue, fine dust and biological contamination from mixed waste streams. Hot water pressure washing at 80–90°C is the effective specification for biological contamination removal from sorting equipment surfaces. Cold water moves contamination; hot water at temperature kills the bacteria and organic residue that causes odour and pest attraction.

Yard and hardstanding wash-down
MRF yards, skip bays and vehicle reception areas accumulate heavy contamination from waste vehicles, leachate and organic waste residue. High-flow cold water pressure washers or petrol machines for remote areas without mains power. Surface cleaner attachments for large hardstanding areas. Drain jetting accessories for blocked drainage channels.

HGV and collection vehicle cleaning
Waste collection vehicles — RCVs, skip lorries, hook loaders — require regular wash-down for biosecurity, odour control and vehicle maintenance. Hot water pressure washers for vehicle chassis and body wash-down. Cold water high-flow machines for wheel and underbody cleaning. Trade effluent consent required for vehicle wash-down water discharge to sewer.

Dust suppression and extraction
MRF dust — from paper and card sorting, shredding and baling operations — is regulated under COSHH 2002. Dust extraction at source is required for sustained dust-generating operations. M-Class extraction (99.9% H13 HEPA) is the minimum standard for general MRF dust. Where the dust contains contamination from hazardous waste streams, COSHH risk assessment determines the correct class.
Leachate and liquid waste management
Leachate from wet waste streams requires containment before wash-down water reaches drainage. The Environmental Permitting Regulations 2016 (England and Wales) prohibit discharge of contaminated wash-down water to surface water drains without Environment Agency consent. SEPA CAR 2011 governs Scottish waste sites. Wet/dry vacuum recovery for leachate collection before pressure washing reduces the volume of contaminated water requiring management.
Compliance — waste management site cleaning
Environmental Permitting Regulations 2016 — wash-down water from MRF yards and vehicle cleaning must not enter surface water drainage without EA consent. Trade effluent consent required for discharge to sewer above domestic thresholds.
COSHH 2002 — dust generated during sorting, shredding and baling operations is a hazardous substance. COSHH risk assessment required. M-Class extraction minimum for general dust.
PUWER 1998 — all cleaning equipment used on site is subject to PUWER inspection and maintenance requirements.
Simpler Recycling (2025–2027) — expanded collection obligations require MRF operators to handle increased material volumes and new waste streams. Infrastructure investment includes upgraded sorting and cleaning equipment.
V-TUF equipment for waste management sites
Hot water pressure washers — sorting equipment and vehicle cleaning
RAPID VSC and RAPID MSH for biological contamination removal from sorting equipment, conveyor surfaces and collection vehicles. 80–90°C water temperature kills odour-causing bacteria and organic residue that cold water does not remove.

Wet/dry industrial vacuums — leachate recovery
MAMMOTH 240V Stainless 80L for leachate and liquid waste recovery before pressure washing. Reduces contaminated water volume requiring trade effluent management.
M-Class dust extraction — sorting and processing areas
MIGHTY HSV M-Class (110V and 240V) for dust extraction at source during sorting, shredding and baling operations. COSHH 2002 compliance for regulated dust in materials processing.
