Arable Farming Cleaning Equipment — Grain Stores & Seasonal Wash-Down
Arable farming cleaning equipment — grain stores, sprayer decontamination and seasonal wash-down
Arable farming generates distinct and seasonal cleaning requirements across the farming year — grain store preparation before harvest, combine harvester and header cleaning at season end, sprayer decontamination between crops and chemicals, and the ongoing maintenance of farm yards, concrete pads and hard standing across the arable estate. Each task has a different equipment requirement and a different compliance context — sprayer decontamination is as much about preventing crop damage in the next field as it is about equipment maintenance, grain store cleaning is a food safety and pest control requirement, and combine cleaning is essential for seed hygiene and fire prevention.
Task-by-task equipment specification — arable farming
Grain store cleaning — pre-harvest preparation
Grain stores must be thoroughly cleaned before each harvest campaign — removal of grain residues, chaff, dust and pest harbourage from floor, wall and roof surfaces is a food safety requirement under the Food and Feed Hygiene regulations that apply to grain intended for human or animal consumption. Grain stores are assessed by agricultural assurance schemes including Red Tractor Combinable Crops and TASCC (Trade Assurance Scheme for Combinable Crops). A clean, pest-free grain store is an audit requirement, not merely good practice.
Grain store cleaning involves dry debris removal first — vacuum or sweep to remove loose grain, chaff and rodent harbourage — followed by pressure washing of concrete floors, walls and structural surfaces. A petrol machine is the standard specification for grain stores where mains electricity is not available at the store location.
V-TUF TORRENT2 — 200 bar petrol pressure washer

Combine harvester and header cleaning — end of season
End-of-season combine cleaning serves two purposes: seed hygiene (preventing volunteer crop germination from seed carried over between harvest years) and fire prevention (removing crop debris and dust from hot surfaces, straw walkers and electrical systems that are the primary cause of combine fires). The HSE estimates that combine fires cost UK farmers millions of pounds annually — thorough cleaning of crop debris from the combine after harvest is the most effective preventive measure.
Combine cleaning requires high pressure and high flow rate to reach the underside of the chassis, within the header, through the straw walker and into the threshing drum — a long lance and a machine with at least 200 bar and 15 L/min is the practical minimum for effective combine cleaning. A petrol machine provides the independence needed to clean in the field or at a remote grain store.
V-TUF GB110 — Honda gearbox, 200 bar, 21 L/min
Honda GX340 gearbox-driven, 200 bar, 21 L/min. High flow for thorough combine and header cleaning. SKU GB110.
Sprayer decontamination — between crops and chemicals
Sprayer decontamination between chemical products is a legal requirement under UK plant protection product regulations — residues of one product in the sprayer tank can cause phytotoxic damage in the next crop if not completely removed. The NFU, AHDB and chemical companies all publish sprayer decontamination protocols that include internal tank rinsing, boom and nozzle cleaning, and external machine washing. Petrol pressure washers are the standard for external sprayer cleaning at the sprayer park or in the field; a clean water rinse through the tank system is the internal protocol.
V-TUF TORRENT2 — 200 bar petrol or V-TUF GB110 — 200 bar, 21 L/min: external boom, frame and tank cleaning between crops. High pressure for nozzle and boom filter cleaning.
Farm yard, concrete pad and hard standing
Arable farm yards accumulate mud, grain spillage, chemical residue and organic matter year-round. Yard cleaning serves biosecurity, fire prevention and environmental compliance purposes — chemical residues and grain spillage must not enter surface water drains or watercourses. A petrol machine is the standard specification for large yard areas.
V-TUF TORRENT 3 — petrol, 275 bar, 15 L/min
For the most heavily contaminated concrete pads and yard surfaces where compacted material requires maximum pressure. SKU TORRENT3.
Typical use case — arable farm, Lincolnshire, end of harvest
A Lincolnshire combinable crops farm uses a GB110 (200 bar, 21 L/min) for end-of-season combine and header cleaning — high flow rate reaches into the straw walker, threshing drum and under-chassis areas where crop debris accumulates and creates fire risk. The MAMMOTH 240V Stainless removes loose grain and chaff from the combine cab, grain tank and header before wet washing. The TORRENT2 petrol covers the grain store pre-harvest clean and the sprayer external wash between crops. All machines on a farm trade account.
Compliance — arable farming
- Red Tractor Combinable Crops: grain store cleaning and pest control are assessed at Red Tractor Combinable Crops audits. TASCC certification also requires documented grain store cleaning procedures.
- UK Plant Protection Product Regulations: sprayer decontamination between products is a legal requirement. Failure to decontaminate correctly can result in phytotoxic damage to following crops and potential regulatory non-compliance.
- HSE — combine fire prevention: the HSE publishes guidance on combine fire prevention that includes thorough end-of-season cleaning as the primary control measure.
- Environment Agency: grain store washings and sprayer washings must not enter surface water drains or watercourses. See Environmental Permitting guidance →
