Set construction and strike

Set construction generates the same dust hazards as any construction site — wood dust, MDF dust, plaster dust, paint dust. CDM 2015 applies to set construction in permanent studio facilities where significant construction work is ongoing. M-Class extraction for wood and MDF dust is the compliant specification.

Practical effects cleanup

Practical effects — explosions, fire, smoke, rain, soil, sand, fake snow, foam — leave significant residue requiring cleanup between takes, between setups and at wrap. Wet and dry recovery, rapid turnaround, compact equipment that can work around camera and lighting rigs without disrupting the set.

Location filming cleanup

Location filming generates cleanup obligations as a condition of location agreements — public spaces, heritage buildings, private properties and infrastructure locations all require restoration to pre-filming condition. Pressure washing, wet vacuum recovery and carpet extraction are the standard toolkit.

Studio HVAC and ceiling void cleaning

Large studio volumes accumulate significant dust loading in HVAC systems, lighting rigs and ceiling voids. H-Class or M-Class extraction with high-level cleaning kits is the specification for above-ceiling and lighting rig cleaning operations.

Legislation that applies

COSHH Regulations 2002 — wood dust, MDF dust and practical effects chemical residues are COSHH-controlled substances in production environments.

CDM 2015 — applies to set construction in studio environments where construction work is significant and ongoing.

HSE EH40 — hardwood dust WEL 3 mg/m3, softwood 5 mg/m3, MDF 1 mg/m3 respirable. M-Class extraction minimum for all wood and MDF operations.
