Dust extraction classification — L, M and H-Class

The correct dust extraction class is determined by the hazard of the dust being generated — not the size of the job or the duration of the work. The wrong class is a COSHH 2002 and CDM 2015 breach regardless of how small the operation appears.

L-Class — 99% filtration. Low hazard and domestic use only. Not compliant for any regulated construction dust →

M-Class — 99.9% filtration. The legal minimum for construction dust, wood dust, concrete and silica under COSHH 2002 and CDM 2015 →

H-Class — 99.995% filtration. Mandatory for asbestos (CAR 2012), mould (COSHH), ICRA Type C and D clinical environments and carcinogenic dust →

Compliance — CDM 2015, COSHH, CAR 2012 and HSE dust classifications

CDM 2015 places duties on every project team member to control health and safety risks including dust. COSHH requires exposure to RCS to be prevented or controlled — WEL 0.1 mg/m³ over 8 hours. M-Class for general construction dust; H-Class for silica, asbestos, lead and other high-hazard dusts.

Workshop, woodworking and composite dust

The same M-Class and H-Class rules apply in workshops and small studios. Hardwood dust is a Category 1 carcinogen. Resin, GRP and carbon fibre generate fine particulate that a standard workshop vacuum recirculates rather than captures.
