Offshore Wind Manufacturing — Industrial Cleaning Equipment

Weld spatter and grinding dust extraction

Monopile and tower section fabrication generates continuous weld spatter, grinding dust and thermal cutting fume across the fabrication hall floor. Weld spatter and grinding debris on fabrication hall floors is a slip hazard and a fire risk — accumulated fine metal dust from grinding operations is combustible. Industrial wet and dry vacuums provide the suction and tank capacity for production-scale weld spatter and grinding debris collection across large fabrication floor areas. Where grinding operations generate fine metallic dust at concentrations above workplace exposure limits, M-Class extraction at source is the appropriate standard. Abrasive blasting and surface preparation cleaning

Monopile and tower section surfaces require abrasive blasting to Sa 2.5 or Sa 3 standard before coating application. Abrasive blasting generates large volumes of spent abrasive, mill scale and rust debris on fabrication hall floors. Industrial vacuums with high-capacity tanks are the correct specification for spent abrasive collection — the volume of debris generated by blasting large-diameter monopile sections requires equipment with the tank capacity and suction to handle it at production scale. Abrasive blasting dust from steel surfaces containing mill scale and rust is classified as a substance hazardous to health under COSHH 2002 — COSHH assessment required for blasting operations.

Coating booth and paint shop cleaning

Offshore wind components receive multi-coat corrosion protection systems — typically epoxy primer, intermediate coat and topcoat — applied in controlled coating booths or open fabrication bays. Coating booth floors, spray equipment and surrounding areas accumulate overspray, solvent residue and coating debris. Industrial vacuums for dry coating debris collection; pressure washing for floor and equipment cleaning between coating operations. COSHH assessment required for all coating materials including primers, topcoats and thinners. DSEAR assessment required for coating operations involving flammable solvents — coating booths and adjacent areas may be classified as ATEX hazardous zones.

Component wash-down before inspection and despatch

Completed monopile sections, transition pieces and tower sections require wash-down before dimensional inspection, coating inspection and pre-despatch survey. Industrial pressure washing removes fabrication residue, handling marks and contamination from component surfaces before inspection. For Teesside and Humber-based fabricators, component despatch to installation vessels involves sea transport — salt spray contamination during transport is a coating performance risk, making pre-despatch cleanliness critical. Hot water pressure washing at 70–90°C provides more effective contamination removal from large steel component surfaces than cold water.

Fabrication hall and production area cleaning

Large-scale offshore wind fabrication halls — particularly XXL monopile facilities fabricating foundations for next-generation 15–20MW turbines — have floor areas measured in tens of thousands of square metres. Shift-end and periodic cleaning of fabrication hall floors, welding bays, assembly areas and loading zones requires industrial cleaning equipment with sufficient capacity and portability to cover large areas efficiently. Diesel-powered pressure washers provide self-contained cleaning capability across large fabrication floor areas without dependence on fixed electrical supply points.

  • COSHH — weld fume, grinding dust and coating materials — weld fume is classified as a human carcinogen. HSE updated its enforcement position on weld fume extraction in 2019 — local exhaust ventilation is required for all MIG, MMA and TIG welding operations. Grinding dust and abrasive blasting residue from steel surfaces require COSHH assessment. Coating materials including primers, topcoats and solvents require COSHH assessment.   • DSEAR 2002 — coating and solvent operations — coating operations involving flammable solvents require DSEAR assessment. Coating booths and spray areas may be classified as ATEX hazardous zones.   • Fire risk — metallic dust accumulation — fine metallic dust from grinding and cutting operations is combustible. Accumulated metallic dust on fabrication hall floors, roof structures and equipment presents a dust explosion and fire risk. Regular industrial vacuum cleaning of these areas reduces the risk. Fire risk assessment should include metallic dust accumulation as a specific hazard.
