Frequently Asked Questions

What cleaning solution do I use with the SPRAYEX?

Use V-TUF VTC420 carpet and upholstery sanitiser, diluted to the label specification. The VTC420 is 10x concentrated — do not apply neat to fabric. Dilute at 1:10 with clean water for spray extraction use. Do not use washing-up liquid, general purpose cleaner or undiluted chemicals — these leave residue in the fibre that attracts dirt faster and can damage fabric over time.

For heavily soiled areas allow the diluted solution to dwell for 3–5 minutes before extracting. For pet urine or old stains, allow 10–15 minutes dwell time.

Do I need to dilute the cleaning solution before use?

Yes — always dilute before use. The V-TUF VTC420 is 10x concentrated and must never be applied neat to fabric. Dilute at 1:10 with clean water for spray extraction use. Check the machine instructions for the recommended dilution ratio if filling the solution tank directly, as this may differ slightly from hand-spray use.

Applying concentrated solution to fabric can cause discolouration, residue build-up and damage to foam padding. When in doubt, test on a hidden area first.

Can I use the SPRAYEX on car seats and van interiors?

Yes — the SPRAYEX with the upholstery attachment is the correct tool for extraction cleaning of car seats, boot carpet, van load area carpet and cab upholstery. Remove as much dry pet hair or loose debris as possible before wet cleaning. Test diluted VTC420 on a hidden area first on any fabric you have not cleaned before.

Do not use the SPRAYEX on the headliner — the fabric is glued to a board substrate and excessive moisture will cause the glue to fail. Use a lightly dampened cloth on the headliner instead.

Leave doors and windows open after cleaning and allow the interior to dry completely before closing the vehicle — typically 2–4 hours in warm weather.

Can I use the SPRAYEX on sofas, mattresses and upholstery at home?

Yes — check the fabric care label on your sofa or upholstered furniture first. Most modern sofas carry a W (water-based cleaners) or WS (water or solvent) code and are safe for extraction cleaning with diluted VTC420. Do not use on S-coded or X-coded fabrics.

Test on a hidden area first — the underside of a cushion or the back panel of the sofa. Apply diluted VTC420, leave two minutes, blot dry. If colour transfers to the cloth, stop and seek professional advice.

Leave cushions off and allow to dry completely before replacing — typically 2–4 hours with windows open and a fan running. A damp sofa left in a warm room will develop mould and odour.

How do I remove pet smells from carpet using the SPRAYEX?

Pet odour in carpet comes from uric acid crystals in the fibre. When damp, they reactivate and release the characteristic ammonia smell — which is why surface sprays that add moisture can make the smell worse before it gets better.

For fresh pet accidents: blot immediately with paper towels, pressing firmly. Apply diluted VTC420 and allow to dwell for 3–5 minutes. Extract with the SPRAYEX carpet head. Repeat until the recovered water runs light.

For old or set-in pet stains: apply diluted VTC420 and allow 10–15 minutes dwell time. Agitate gently with a soft brush. Extract. Multiple passes will be needed. Allow to dry fully with windows open — the smell will continue to reduce over 24–48 hours as residual moisture evaporates.

How long does carpet take to dry after extraction cleaning?

In a well-ventilated room in warm weather, most carpets are dry within 2–4 hours after extraction cleaning. In cold weather, poorly ventilated rooms, or where the carpet has been heavily soiled and required multiple passes, allow 4–8 hours or longer.

Open windows and use a fan directed at the cleaned area to speed drying. Run a dehumidifier if you have one. Do not replace furniture until the carpet is completely dry — metal furniture feet will cause rust staining and wooden feet can cause dye transfer on damp carpet.

Do not close the room or re-lay rugs over damp carpet — trapped moisture in a warm room creates ideal conditions for mould growth within 24–48 hours.

Is the SPRAYEX suitable for void property preparation?

Yes — the SPRAYEX is widely used by social housing maintenance contractors, void property preparation teams and letting agents for extraction cleaning of carpets, upholstery and mattresses between tenancies.

For void property work across multiple rooms, the SPRAYEX 77L is the correct specification — the larger recovery tank handles sustained use without constant emptying and the higher motor power maintains suction on heavily soiled carpets.

Under Awaab's Law (Social Housing Regulation Act 2023), void property preparation must address contamination before relet. Extraction cleaning of carpets and soft furnishings is part of the remediation standard expected of housing associations and local authority maintenance teams.

What is spray extraction and how is it different from vacuuming?

Vacuuming removes loose surface dirt and debris from carpet and upholstery fibres. It does not clean the fibre itself.

Spray extraction injects diluted cleaning solution under pressure into the fabric fibres, scrubs with a brush head, and simultaneously extracts the dirty solution back into a recovery tank. In one pass it addresses what a vacuum cannot reach — embedded soil, bacteria, odour compounds, uric acid from pet accidents, and the accumulated contamination in the fibre that vacuuming leaves behind.

The difference is visible in the colour of the water in the recovery tank after the first pass. On a carpet that has only been vacuumed, the first extraction pass will produce dark, murky water. That is the contamination leaving the fibre — not something the vacuum was removing.

Is the SPRAYEX XR suitable for van-based mobile cleaning?

Yes — the SPRAYEX XR range (30 XR and 60 XR) is specifically engineered for mobile operatives and van-based cleaning contractors. The Xtra Rugged (XR) construction uses an impact-resistant rotomoulded body that survives daily loading, transit and on-site use.

The 14L recovery tank is compact for van storage. The 60 XR includes a turbo brush for deep agitation on heavily soiled carpets — particularly useful for end-of-tenancy cleaning where carpets have not been extraction cleaned for extended periods.

For mobile dog groomers, the XR range is also the correct choice for vehicle interior and grooming area extraction cleaning where a smaller, portable machine is needed between client visits.

How do I clean and maintain the SPRAYEX after use?

After each use: empty the recovery tank completely and rinse with clean water. Empty and rinse the solution tank. Run clean water through the machine briefly to flush the pump, hose and extraction head. Leave all caps open to allow the tanks to air dry — storing with residual moisture in the tanks promotes mould and odour.

Clean the filter after every use. The filter is washable — rinse under clean water and allow to dry fully before refitting. A blocked filter reduces suction performance and increases motor load.

Check the upholstery tool and carpet head for debris after each use and clean the brush area. Store the machine with hoses coiled loosely — do not kink or tightly coil hoses as this weakens the hose wall over time.

What is the difference between the SPRAYEX and a wet/dry vacuum?

A wet/dry vacuum extracts liquid and dry debris from surfaces. It does not inject any cleaning solution — it only removes what is already on the surface or in the pile.

The SPRAYEX spray extraction machine does two things simultaneously: it injects diluted cleaning solution under pressure into the carpet or upholstery fibres, agitates with a brush head, and extracts the dirty solution back into the recovery tank. It cleans the fibre, not just the surface.

For deep cleaning of carpets, sofas, mattresses and vehicle interiors where embedded contamination, stains and odours need to be removed — the SPRAYEX is the correct tool. A wet/dry vacuum is a general-purpose debris and liquid removal tool, not a cleaning machine for fabric.

Can I use the SPRAYEX on hard floors?

Yes — the SPRAYEX can be used on hard floors including tile, stone, vinyl and laminate with the appropriate hard floor cleaning head. The spray injection system delivers cleaning solution onto the floor surface and the extraction head simultaneously picks it up, leaving the floor clean and dry rather than wet.

Do not use the SPRAYEX on unsealed wood flooring — the moisture injected into unsealed wood can cause swelling and damage. For sealed wood or laminate, use minimum solution and ensure the floor dries quickly after cleaning.

For routine hard floor cleaning the SPRAYEX is more effective than mopping — mopping redistributes contamination across the floor surface, whereas extraction removes it.

Is this product safe around children and pets once dry?

Once fully dry, most V-TUF cleaning chemicals are safe for normal contact with children and pets. Always allow treated surfaces to dry completely before allowing children or animals into contact with them.

For specific safety information for your product, check the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) — Section 2 covers hazard identification and Section 8 covers exposure controls. The SDS is available from V-TUF or from the product page.

If a child or animal comes into contact with a wet or concentrated cleaning chemical, follow the first aid guidance in the SDS Section 4. In case of concern, contact the National Poisons Information Service (0344 892 0111) or your veterinary practice.

What warranty does the machine come with?

V-TUF machines come with a 1-year manufacturer's warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship under normal use conditions. The warranty does not cover damage from misuse, incorrect voltage supply, use with non-approved chemicals, or failure to maintain the machine in accordance with the user manual.

What is PUWER and does it apply to my equipment?

PUWER — the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 — applies to any equipment used at work. It requires that work equipment is suitable for its intended purpose, maintained in safe working order, inspected at appropriate intervals, and operated only by personnel who have received adequate training and information.

PUWER applies to V-TUF pressure washers, vacuums, dust extractors and spray extraction machines when used in a work context — including by sole traders, contractors and employees. It does not apply to domestic use in a private home.

In practice, PUWER compliance means: use the machine only for its intended purpose, carry out the maintenance specified in the user manual, keep a record of maintenance and inspection, and ensure operators are trained before use. The V-TUF TotalCare managed equipment programme includes annual safety inspection and maintenance records that directly support PUWER compliance.

What is the difference between 110V and 240V?

240V is the standard UK mains voltage — suitable for any location with a mains socket. This is the correct choice for use in domestic properties, offices, kennels, grooming salons, workshops and most commercial premises.

110V is the mandated voltage for portable electrical equipment on UK construction and maintenance sites under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. A 110V centre-tapped earth (CTE) supply from a yellow site transformer limits the shock voltage to 55V, significantly reducing the risk of fatal electric shock in wet or outdoor site conditions.

If you are working on a construction site, in a void property under active refurbishment, or anywhere a site manager has specified 110V — use the 110V model. Do not use a 240V machine on a site where 110V is specified.

Do I need a transformer to use a 110V machine?

Yes — 110V machines require a 110V centre-tapped earth (CTE) site transformer to operate. These are standard equipment on UK construction and maintenance sites and are available from tool hire companies. Do not attempt to connect a 110V machine directly to a 240V mains supply.

If you are not working on a construction site and do not have a site transformer, the 240V model is the correct choice.
