Dust hazards in textile processing — COSHH classification
Textile processing generates a range of airborne dust and particulate hazards, each with specific COSHH requirements:
- Cotton dust — classified as a respiratory sensitiser under COSHH. Can cause byssinosis (occupational lung disease) and occupational asthma. WEL: 1mg/m³ (lint-free respirable dust). M-Class extraction required as the engineering control.
- Wool and natural fibre dust — respiratory hazard at sustained exposure levels. COSHH risk assessment required. M-Class extraction the appropriate engineering control for processing operations.
- Synthetic fibre dust — glass fibre and mineral fibre classified as possible carcinogens. H-Class extraction required where glass or ceramic fibre is processed.
- Dye dust and chemical particulate — many textile dyes and finishing chemicals are classified hazardous substances under COSHH. Specific WELs apply to individual substances — risk assessment must identify and control each one.
- Lint and general fibre accumulation — fire hazard as well as respiratory hazard. Regular extraction and housekeeping are both a COSHH and a fire risk management requirement.
