Dust Extraction for Makerspaces, Woodworking & Community Workshops

Makerspaces, shared fabrication studios, community woodworking workshops, men's sheds, hackspaces and creative workshop spaces generate the same dust hazards as any commercial joinery or manufacturing operation — with the added complexity that members and visitors may not have occupational health training. The workshop operator as employer (or as the person in control of the premises) has a COSHH duty to control exposure to wood dust, MDF dust, resin dust and metallic dusts regardless of whether the operation is commercial, charitable or community-based.

Wood dust WEL is 5 mg/m³ (softwood) and 3 mg/m³ (hardwood) under HSE EH40. MDF dust is 1 mg/m³ respirable. M-Class extraction is the minimum compliant specification for all woodworking operations. H-Class is required where hardwood dust is generated in sustained quantities — hardwood dust is a Category 1A carcinogen under COSHH.

Who this applies to

  • Makerspaces and hackspaces — shared access fabrication facilities with laser cutters, CNC routers, woodworking tools and metalworking equipment
  • Community woodworking workshops — charity and social enterprise woodworking operations, furniture restoration, upcycling workshops
  • Men's Sheds — community workshop spaces with woodworking, metalworking and general fabrication activity
  • School and college D&T workshops — COSHH duties apply to pupils and staff equally
  • University fabrication labs — research and student workshop environments
  • Artist studios with woodworking — sculptors, furniture makers, prop makers and set builders operating from shared studio space
  • Film and TV prop and set workshops — production company workshops generating MDF and timber dust at volume

Equipment specification

M-Class extraction — softwood, plywood, general timber

V-TUF MIGHTY HSV — 21L M-Class, 110V and 240V

The standard M-Class specification for makerspace and woodworking workshop use. Automatic filter cleaning for sustained workshop sessions. Auto-start PTO socket for direct connection to power tools — router, orbital sander, belt sander.

H-Class extraction — hardwood, MDF at volume, resin dust

V-TUF GRINDEX1100LPS — 25L H-Class, 110V and 240V

H-Class mandatory for hardwood dust (Category 1A carcinogen) and sustained MDF operations. Sealed H14 HEPA, auto-shaker, PTO tool start.

AEROMAX air scrubbers — ambient air quality in open workshop spaces

Shared workshop spaces where multiple members work simultaneously generate airborne dust that point-of-source extraction alone cannot fully capture. HEPA air scrubbers maintain ambient air quality during busy workshop sessions.

COSHH compliance for makerspace operators

The makerspace or workshop operator — whether a CIC, charity, limited company or sole trader — is the employer or person in control of premises under COSHH. The legal duty to control member and visitor exposure to hazardous dust applies regardless of membership model or charitable status.

  • COSHH assessment required covering every dust-generating activity in the space
  • M-Class extraction minimum for all woodworking — point of source, not room ventilation alone
  • H-Class for hardwood and sustained MDF operations
  • LEV equipment (dust extractors) examined and tested at least every 14 months — COSHH Regulation 9
  • Records kept for five years minimum
  • Members using extraction equipment should be inducted on correct use

Workshop cleaning — pressure washers and vacuums

Workshop floor cleaning, equipment wash-down and resin/finish residue removal requires wet vacuum capability and pressure washing for external areas.
