Plant wash-down — what's required
Returned plant — excavators, dumpers, telehandlers, compressors, generators, access platforms, tools — arrives back at the depot covered in site mud, concrete residue, diesel, hydraulic fluid and general construction contamination. Clean-before-rehire is both a commercial standard and increasingly a contractual requirement on larger hire frameworks. The correct specification depends on what's being washed:
Mud, site dirt and concrete residue: 150–200 bar cold water at 12–15 L/min. High flow rate matters as much as pressure for rinsing large plant quickly.
Diesel, hydraulic oil and grease: Hot water (60–95°C) is required to emulsify oil-based contamination. Cold water at any pressure will not cut through hydraulic fluid effectively.
Confined areas and detailed cleaning: Adjustable lances and surface cleaners for wheel arches, undercarriages and tracked drive systems.

Dust extraction for hire tool maintenance
Tool hire depots servicing angle grinders, cut-off saws, core drills and breakers for rehire must clean and check tools on return. Dust extraction at the service bench — M-Class minimum — is a COSHH requirement where construction dust is present.

Environmental compliance — plant washdown water
Plant wash-down water containing concrete, hydraulic oil, diesel or suspended solids must not enter surface water drains or watercourses. Environmental Permitting Regulations 2016 apply to any commercial wash operation. Runoff must be captured and disposed of correctly.
